Attention Parents! Could you use a Parent Coach?

Do the demands of parenting overwhelm you? I can help you sort through the pressures of life so you can focus your time and energy on what is most important to your family. Would you like to find ways to work more as a team with your spouse? Would you like some support as you welcome a new baby into your home or navigate the school system? Whatever your concern, I will work with you to set goals based on what is important to you. Parent coaching sessions are tailored to you, your unique family, and the specific concerns of your family. I will help you discover more about the unique strengths of your family, assist you in identifying your dreams, and help you with designing action steps to move toward your dreams. I would love to discuss how parent coaching can benefit you and your family.

I bring a broad range of knowledge and experiences to GarnetStar Coaching. I've earned PCI Parent Coach Certification® through the Parent Coaching Institute in Bellevue, Washington. I am also a certified teacher in Washington State with a degree in Elementary Education from Washington State University and an endorsement in Early Childhood Education. My husband and I are privileged to be the parents of three wonderful children: a daughter in middle school, a daughter in first grade, and a two-year old son. I am passionate about my family, my friends, and living a healthy, active, and fun life filled with love for those around me. I love living my life with great intention and currently spend my time caring for my family, parent coaching, volunteering with my church, and mentoring young women through the ministry of Young Life.

I am an adoptive parent of three fabulous young adults ages 22, 19, and 18 who have been my teachers and my inspiration. My coaching practice blends my experience as a parent with my expertise as a masters-level community health educator to help parents bridge the gap between what they are told will work and what really does work for their family. I have had experience with ADHD, adolescent depression, Dyslexia, and Sensory Integration Disorder, and I understand fully what it means to be a parent in chaos.

I am co-owner of Life's a Poodle, a grassroots organization promoting the success and dignity of children who learn differently.

I work with individual parents and couples in the following areas:

  • Adoption
  • Advocating for a child with learning differences (e.g., dyslexia and ADHD)
  • Co-parenting discrepancies
  • Setting appropriate boundaries for all ages
  • Setting appropriate screen time boundaries (computer, video games)
  • Teens transitioning home after wilderness or a boarding school placement
  • Social networking guidelines (i.e., texting, MySpace, Facebook, Twitter)

My goal as a PCI Certified Parent Coach® is to partner with parents in a collaborative relationship, combining their strengths (which they may have forgotten in tough times) with my child development and parenting knowledge. Together we:

  1. Discover what is working in the family's system, and use that information to address challenges.
  2. Develop a dream for the future, picturing the elements of those challenges resolved, and feeling the satisfaction and relief that realized dreams will provide.
  3. Design action steps for addressing the challenges. Together, we devise, test and "tweak" that design. We use the parental and family strengths, combined with my abilities to provide new resources, pertinent child development information, effective parenting techniques and modified alternatives—which fit your family.
  4. Recognize a Destiny—Acknowledge both the small steps and the transformations those small steps make in your family's living system. You can do this!

I have a great respect for the children we parents are entrusted with. My ability to walk in a child's shoes to explain their actions is one of my strengths. I am the parent of grown children, so I have also walked more then a mile in those shoes. It is my goal, through coaching, to support those who value this job of parenting as much as I do.

To contact me for more information about my credentials, my coaching practice, or to sign up for my free e-newsletter "Picket Fence Parenting," please visit my website at www.picketfenceparenting.com. I look forward to hearing from you.

The name of my practice—Peak Experience Parenting—ties to the term "peak experience," first coined in 1959 by Abraham Maslow, the professor of psychology who founded humanistic psychology and is best known for creating "Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs." He says a peak experience is one that creates sudden feelings of intense happiness and well-being, even the awareness of an 'ultimate truth' and the unity of all things.

As a parent coach, my goal is to help you—the parent—reach peak experiences of interconnectedness, harmony, and true happiness. Specifically, I will help you to do the following:

  • Tune into your values, and be authentic in your parenting.
  • Discover your parenting style and understand your unique strengths and challenges.
  • Discover creative ways to support the day-to-day aspects of your life.
  • Take care of yourself so that you have more to give as a parent.
  • Learn how our media-driven culture impacts families and what you can do to restore balance.

Though I work with all families, I specialize in working with parents who are globally mobile or in intercultural relationships. When partners are raised in different cultures, they face unique parenting challenges. I help parents foster an awareness and appreciation of each other's cultural differences so they can raise their children in a way that brings true authenticity and fulfillment to each member of the family.

Call me today to find out how I can help you become aware of the possible joy in each moment so you can experience peace and fulfillment throughout your parenting journey.

Receive Confidential Help Via the Telephone—No Child Care to Arrange
New Clients Receive 30 Minutes of Free Consultation

Parent coaching is intended to help a parent who is working through a parenting issue, such as:

  • a new parent adjusting to parenthood
  • a parent needing a better way to manage a toddler's roller coaster emotions
  • a parent exploring his/her child's school future
  • a parent curious about how to parent in a more positive way
  • parents interested in creating a parenting plan for raising their child(ren)
  • parents seeking common ground when there is a disagreement about how to parent
  • parents who are striving to balance the demands of work and family
  • parents who are parenting a child with a mental health issue

Parent coaching is not therapy. Therapy tends to focus on healing past emotional wounds and is often-times a much needed resource for the family. Parent coaching goes beyond therapy by helping a parent focus on finding and developing better strategies for parenting in the future.

Parent coaching is a very family friendly way to get help for the family. This confidential approach can occur in person (Puget Sound) or on the telephone. Telephone parent coaching takes away the need for finding a sitter for the child(ren) because the coaching call can happen while the child is napping or after bedtime when the time is right for the family. Also, parent coaching can occur while the parent is at work during the lunch break, if that fits the family schedule better.

My husband and I are actively and happily parenting two boys who are 14 and 10 years of age. We work to manage the many tugs and pulls on family life of their after school activities which include sports, music, and scouting. I have been working with families as a parent education instructor at a local community college for over ten years. I have found that sometimes parents need more help than just "knowing" what to do. This is where parent coaching comes in. I feel that parent coaching is the bridge to helping parents create and implement a parenting plan that works for their family.

Offering Parents:
  • Support
  • Education
  • Coaching
  • Encouragement
Offering the Community Family Friendly Classes:
  • What Do Children Need to Succeed?
  • What Kind of Parent Do You Want to Be?
  • What Are the Benefits of Your Parenting Style?
  • How Do You Parent Well?

As all parents know, raising a child is the most important, challenging, frustrating, and rewarding job in the world. We so often seek support in other areas of our life, but expect our instincts to fully guide us in this lifelong journey. With the caring support, practiced expertise, and informative guidance of a certified parent coach, moms and dads can hone their parenting skills, create a home environment based on their deepest core beliefs, and rest assured, knowing they are fully empowered to match the needs of their children through any age and stage.

As a PCI Certified Parent Coach®, I have helped many families navigate the difficult gray areas of parenting, offering support, care, knowledge, and guidance to help them reach new heights of self-awareness and joy in their family lives. As a former educator, I have observed many families and have learned that each one has its own unique strengths as well as needs. I find great satisfaction in helping my clients grow their gifts and strengths, while minimizing the battles and stresses in their lives.

With a background in secondary education and as a mother of 4-year old twins, I have a wealth of experience of all ages of child development. I also particularly welcome the opportunity to work with moms of multiples.

"Having a regular dialogue with Sheila boosted my confidence; she made me feel very empowered as a new mom. Having on-going conversations/education with her gave me tools to help minimize my worries and focus on my strengths. Time with Sheila each week to share and process my concerns was tremendously therapeutic. Sheila is a wonderful listener, a tender advisor, and had ideas for all my hurdles."
